Zebra Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)

Overview

The Zebra Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra) is a striking and rare moray eel species from the Indo-Pacific, named for its bold black-and-white striped pattern reminiscent of a zebra. This eel is admired for its dramatic coloration, slender body, and nocturnal hunting behavior. While it is uncommon in the aquarium trade due to its size and specialized care needs, it is highly valued by advanced marine aquarists and public aquariums capable of accommodating its requirements.

Description

The Zebra Eel has an elongated, muscular body with alternating black and white vertical stripes along its length, giving it a “zebra-like” appearance. Its large jaws are filled with sharp teeth, adapted for catching fish and crustaceans. Adults can reach up to 2 meters (≈6.5 feet) in length.

Zebra Eels are nocturnal ambush predators, spending most of the day hidden in reef crevices or under rocks and emerging at night to hunt. Their sinuous movements and distinctive striping make them visually striking in both natural habitats and suitable aquaria.

Aquarium Requirements

Minimum Tank Size: 1,000–1,500+ litres (260–400+ US gallons)
(Larger recommended for fully grown adults)

Temperature: 24–27 °C (75–81 °F)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.023–1.026
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: < 20 ppm

Aquascape and Environment:
Provide a spacious aquarium with extensive rockwork, caves, and crevices for hiding. Zebra Eels are expert escape artists, so a secure lid is essential. Moderate water flow and excellent filtration are required to maintain water quality for such a large, carnivorous species.

Diet and Feeding

Zebra Eels are carnivorous, feeding on fish and crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they accept a variety of meaty foods but require consistent feeding to maintain health.

Recommended Foods:

  • Chopped or whole fish

  • Shrimp, squid, and other meaty marine foods

  • Occasional live prey for enrichment

Feed 3–5 times per week for adults, avoiding overfeeding to maintain water quality.

Temperament and Compatibility

Zebra Eels are predatory and territorial. They should only be housed with robust, large tankmates that cannot be swallowed. Smaller fish or invertebrates are considered prey.

Suitable Tankmates:

  • Large, non-aggressive fish such as groupers, large wrasses, and snappers

  • Other large morays only in very spacious setups with ample hiding areas

Avoid:

  • Small fish and invertebrates

  • Crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs

  • Aggressive species that may provoke the eel

Reef Compatibility

⚠️ Not Reef Safe

Zebra Eels are unsuitable for reef aquariums containing small fish or invertebrates, as they will prey on them. Their movements may also disturb loose rockwork or fragile coral frags.

Safe With:

  • None in conventional reef setups

Use Caution With:

  • Large corals may be indirectly disturbed by eel movements

Additional Information

  • Maximum Size: Up to 2 meters (≈6.5 feet)

  • Lifespan: 15–20+ years in captivity

  • Difficulty Level: Advanced (due to size, feeding needs, and escape risk)

  • Natural Behaviour: Nocturnal, crevice-dwelling ambush predator; territorial

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific – East Africa to Hawaii

  • Colouration: Black-and-white vertical stripes; “zebra-like” appearance

Summary

The Zebra Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra) is a large, visually dramatic moray eel species best suited for advanced aquarists with large, secure tanks. Predatory and reef-incompatible, it requires a spacious, well-structured environment, strong filtration, and a varied carnivorous diet. With proper care, it becomes an engaging, nocturnal centerpiece in a large marine aquarium, showcasing the unique beauty of striped Indo-Pacific morays.
