Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus)

Overview

The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus) is a striking and unique marine fish known for its vibrant yellow body, contrasting black facial mask, and sharp venomous spines on the dorsal fins. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef, this species is a peaceful herbivore and an excellent addition to community and reef aquariums.

Foxface Rabbitfish are active grazers that help control algae growth and display intriguing behaviors such as “flaring” their dorsal spines when threatened.

Aquarium Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (285 litres)

  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.020–1.025

  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

  • Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: < 10 ppm

  • Aquascape: Provide ample swimming space, live rock for grazing, and hiding places to reduce stress

Foxface Rabbitfish are active swimmers and benefit from a well-maintained, spacious aquarium with stable water conditions.

Diet and Feeding

Primarily herbivorous, the Foxface Rabbitfish thrives on a diet rich in marine algae:

  • Dried seaweed (nori) or macroalgae sheets

  • Spirulina-based flakes or pellets

  • Frozen or prepared herbivore blends

  • Occasional small amounts of meaty foods

Feed two to three times daily in small portions to promote natural grazing behavior and maintain health.

Temperament and Compatibility

Foxface Rabbitfish are generally peaceful and reef safe, though they may become territorial toward similarly sized species if the tank is crowded.

Tankmate Recommendations:

  • Suitable: Peaceful or semi-aggressive species such as tangs, angelfish, clownfish, and wrasses

  • Avoid: Aggressive tankmates that may stress the Foxface

Introduce slowly to an established aquarium to minimize stress and encourage natural behavior.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Safe

Foxface Rabbitfish are reef safe and do not harm corals or sessile invertebrates. Their algae grazing helps maintain a balanced reef environment.

Caution: The dorsal spines are venomous and can cause painful stings. Handle with care during maintenance.
