Elegance Coral (Catalaphyllia jardinei)

Description:
The Elegance Coral is one of the most iconic and captivating LPS corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its flowing, fleshy tentacles and radiant coloration — this coral adds stunning movement and natural beauty to any tank. Its large, sweeping polyps sway gracefully in the current, creating a serene, underwater garden effect.

The Elegance Coral is an excellent choice for reef keepers seeking a standout centerpiece coral with moderate care requirements. Each specimen is either aquacultured or sustainably collected to ensure health, vibrancy, and adaptability to captive systems.

Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (extends long sweeper tentacles at night)
Placement: Bottom or lower-middle areas of the aquarium, allowing ample room for expansion and to avoid contact with nearby corals.

Ideal Water Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4

Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrate: <10 ppm
Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
Flow: Low to moderate, indirect
Lighting: Moderate (PAR 100–150); prefers indirect light to avoid bleaching

Feeding & Nutrition:

While the Elegance Coral receives most of its energy from photosynthesis via its symbiotic zooxanthellae, it benefits greatly from supplemental feeding. Offer small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, or reef-specific coral foods 1–2 times per week to encourage faster growth and maintain vibrant coloration.

Notes:

  • Allow at least several inches of space between the Elegance Coral and other species to prevent stings.

  • Prefers a soft, sandy substrate or flat rock where its fleshy base can expand comfortably.

  • Avoid strong direct flow or high-intensity lighting.

  • Ideal for mature reef systems with stable water chemistry.
