Aquacultured Clown – Black Storm (Amphiprion ocellaris)
Overview
The Black Storm Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a striking aquacultured designer variant renowned for its bold black-and-white marbled patterning and lively behaviour. Exclusively captive-bred, this variety is hardy, adaptable, and fully reef safe, making it a popular choice among both beginner and advanced aquarists.
Unlike wild-caught species, the Black Storm is accustomed to aquarium conditions from birth, offering excellent feeding responses and reliable long-term success. Its distinctive colour pattern and engaging personality make it a standout addition to nano and larger reef aquariums.
Description
The Black Storm Clownfish exhibits a compact, oval, laterally compressed body characteristic of A. ocellaris, with a unique blotched pattern of deep black and crisp white. Each individual displays slightly different marbling, giving the variety an appealing and unpredictable appearance. The face may show shades of orange or yellow depending on the breeding line.
Adults reach 7–9 cm (3–3.5 inches). The smooth, velvety black pigmentation and swirling white patches make this variant particularly eye-catching and easily distinguished from standard ocellaris colour morphs.

Diet and Feeding

Finely chopped seafood mixtures

Supplemental algae-based or spirulina foods

Suitable Tankmates:

Peaceful reef species such as gobies, blennies, dartfish, chromis, and small wrasses
-
Reef-safe invertebrates like shrimp and snails
-
Another A. ocellaris only when kept as a bonded pair or introduced simultaneously
Avoid:
-
Other clownfish species (to prevent territorial disputes)
-
Large or aggressive fish that may dominate or stress smaller tankmates
-
Fast, competitive feeders in small aquariums
