Clown Tang
Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus)
Overview
The Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), also known as the Lined Surgeonfish or Blue-Lined Tang, is a visually stunning and energetic species prized for its bold coloration and constant activity. Featuring vibrant horizontal blue and yellow stripes across its body and a striking orange-edged tail, this fish is a true showpiece in large marine aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including reefs and lagoons throughout the Indian Ocean, the Clown Tang is a demanding but rewarding species that thrives in spacious, high-flow environments with stable water conditions.
Aquarium Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons (680 litres) or larger
Temperature: 24ā27°C (75ā81°F)
pH: 8.1ā8.4
Specific Gravity (Salinity): 1.020ā1.025

Aquascape: Provide open swimming space with strong water flow and sturdy rock structures for grazing and shelter
The Clown Tang requires a large, well-established marine system with excellent water quality and high oxygen levels. Consistent filtration, aeration, and frequent water changes are essential for maintaining its health and vibrant coloration.
Diet and Feeding
The Clown Tang is primarily herbivorous, spending most of its day grazing on algae-covered surfaces. In captivity, it should be provided with a varied and nutrient-rich diet that includes:
Dried seaweed (nori) or macroalgae
Spirulina-based flakes and pellets
Marine herbivore frozen blends
Occasional mysis or brine shrimp for added variety
Feed small portions two to three times per day. Regular access to natural algae growth or algae sheets will help satisfy its constant grazing instinct and support digestive health.
Temperament and Compatibility
The Clown Tang is active, territorial, and can be aggressive toward other tangs, particularly those of similar body shape or diet. It is best housed either singly or with carefully selected tankmates in a large aquarium with ample swimming space.
Tankmate Recommendations:
Suitable: Larger peaceful or semi-aggressive marine fish such as angelfish, wrasses, and butterflyfish
Avoid: Other Acanthurus tangs or smaller, timid species that may be bullied
Introducing the Clown Tang last to an established community aquarium can help reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Compatibility
ā Reef Safe
The Clown Tang does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates and is considered reef safe. Its constant grazing helps control algae growth, making it beneficial in large reef systems. However, ensure the aquarium can accommodate its active swimming behavior and potential dominance over other herbivorous fish.
