The Blue Eye Tang – Fiji (Ctenochaetus binotatus) is a beautifully distinctive surgeonfish, easily recognized by its vivid blue-ringed eyes and subtle spotting along the body. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around Fiji, this species is part of the bristletooth tang group, known for their specialized teeth used to graze on algae and detritus. Peaceful and active, the Blue Eye Tang is an excellent addition to large marine or reef aquariums, where it helps maintain a clean and balanced ecosystem.

The Blue Eye Tang thrives in a mature marine system with high water quality and steady oxygenation. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential for long-term health.

Diet and Feeding

The Blue Eye Tang is primarily herbivorous and spends much of its time grazing on film algae and detritus. In captivity, a varied diet should include:

• Dried seaweed (nori) or macroalgae sheets

• Spirulina-based flakes or pellets

• Frozen marine herbivore blends

• Occasional mysis or brine shrimp for protein enrichment

Feed two to three times per day in small portions. A consistent supply of marine-based vegetation promotes natural grazing behavior, vibrant coloration, and a healthy digestive system.

Temperament and Compatibility

This species is generally peaceful and well-suited to community and reef aquariums. It may show mild territorial behavior toward other tangs, especially those of similar body shape or grazing habits.

• Best tankmates: Peaceful reef fish, clownfish, wrasses, gobies, and invertebrates

• Avoid: Aggressive or highly territorial tangs and large predatory species

When introducing more than one tang, ensure a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding places to reduce aggression.
