Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles)
Overview
The Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles) is a striking and highly sought-after marine species known for its jet-black body, vivid orange teardrop marking near the tail, and electric blue highlights along the fins. Native to the Pacific Ocean, particularly around Hawaii and other central Pacific islands, this tang is both beautiful and active, making it a centerpiece fish for large, well-maintained marine aquariums.
Due to its sensitivity and high activity level, the Achilles Tang is best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide pristine water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
Aquarium Requirements
-
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons (475 litres) or larger
-
Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025
-
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
-
Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
-
Nitrate: < 10 ppm
-
Aquascape: Open rockwork with ample swimming space and strong water flow
The Achilles Tang requires a large, oxygen-rich aquarium with excellent filtration and strong circulation. Stable parameters and high water quality are critical, as this species is sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and chemistry. Regular water changes and efficient protein skimming are essential to maintain optimal conditions.
Diet and Feeding
The Achilles Tang is primarily herbivorous and should be offered a diet rich in marine-based plant material. In the wild, it grazes continuously on algae-covered surfaces. In captivity, provide a varied diet consisting of:
-
Dried seaweed (nori) or macroalgae
-
Spirulina-based pellets or flakes
-
Blanched marine greens (e.g., sea lettuce)
-
Occasional frozen mysis or brine shrimp for variety
Feed small portions two to three times daily to support their active metabolism and maintain vibrant coloration.
Temperament and Compatibility
Achilles Tangs are generally peaceful toward other fish but can be territorial toward other tangs, especially those of similar shape or color (such as other Acanthurus species). They may coexist with other tangs in very large systems if introduced carefully and simultaneously.
Ideal tankmates include peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish that can tolerate high water movement. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species that may stress the tang.
Reef Compatibility
The Achilles Tang is reef safe. It will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates and plays a beneficial role by grazing on nuisance algae. Its constant swimming and grazing behavior make it an excellent addition to large reef systems, provided there is adequate space and pristine water conditions.
